“Effective altruism isn’t a slogan — it’s a discipline and a way of operating. There are so many methods of raising awareness, but converting that into real, measurable results is difficult — and involves the evidence-based, well-researched allocation of resources.”

On running Youth United for Good

About

Youth leader.
Future doctor.

A brief introduction to who I am, what I believe, and my mission.

I’m Eythan Soysa. I have just finished my final year as a student at St Olave's Grammar School. I want to use my life to genuinely make a difference. Over several years representing and championing youth voice in Bromley and beyond, I've learned one thing above all else: young people don't need to wait for a seat at the decision-making table. They can build the table themselves.

I just completed my A-levels in Biology, Chemistry, Maths, and German at St Olave's Grammar School, where I served as a school prefect and Student Co-Chair of the Environmental Society. I scored in the top 5% nationally in the UCAT medical entrance exam, and now have offers to study medicine from multiple medical schools. I believe I can have the greatest positive impact on people at the intersection of clinical practice and public health.

This conviction has been at the forefront of all my work so far, from founding the Bromley Schools Climate Conference and Youth United for Good, to advising on mental health and hosting senior politicians during Political Awareness Week. Each of these projects started with the question: what would actually help others the most?

My approach to leadership

I'm deeply committed to Effective Altruism as a framework for decision-making. Not only does it provide a philosophical framework, but it also is the foundation of efficient and impactful project design. When questions like who is most affected, what intervention will help the most, and how do we measure whether it worked are asked, impact can be maximised.

I've represented young people's views to public health leads, headteachers, local councillors, and Members of Parliament. Sitting on local government committees and speaking at crime summits, headteachers' conferences and youth forums has enabled me to promote youth voice. Young people have energy, insights and creative ideas that institutions need to thrive as they look to the future. My mission is to bring out the best in young people and involve the youth in the decision-making and action processes.

Bromley Schools Climate Conference — July 2025

The conference was the culmination of months of planning and marks the beginning of what I hope becomes an annual fixture for young climate advocates across South London.

In July 2025, the inaugural Bromley Schools Climate Conference brought together over 100 attendees including students from 12 schools across London. The event was one of the largest student-led climate events Bromley has seen. The day featured 11 bespoke workshops, a keynote address from Greenerandcleaner CEO Parisa Wright, and had representation from members of the Greater London Assembly.

The Bromley Schools Climate Conference 2026 is taking place on Tuesday 30th June.
